1st Annual NFL Super Bowl LVIII Squares Fundraiser PoolThe Lake Zurich Rotary Club is pleased to announce the kick-off of our 1st Annual NFL Super Bowl Squares Fundraising Pool with a chance to win up to $3,000! In addition to making the game more exciting to watch, you will be helping our club continue to provide support and funding for the ongoing community and global projects we are involved with. NFL Teams: NFC Championship Team vs. AFC Championship Team (TBD) Sales Dates: Monday, January 22, 2024 to Saturday, February 10, 2024 Buy-in Per Square: $50 (with 100 squares available) Payment Methods: Cash, Check (payable to Lake Zurich Rotary Club), VENMO using the QR Code below* *please include your name and square number(s) chosen in the notes section. How it Works:
Ways to Win: END OF QUARTER SCORE: The winner is determined by the last number of each team's score at the end of each quarter (4 quarters in total) and matching those numbers to the corresponding square on the grid. If the 4th quarter ends in a tie, the game will go into over-time and the 4th quarter winner will be determined by the FINAL game score. $500 per quarter for a total of $2,000 in payouts REVERSE END OF QUARTER SCORE: The winner is determined by the last number of each team’s score at the end of each quarter (4 quarters in total) and matching those numbers, IN REVERSE, to the corresponding square on the grid. If the 4th quarter ends in a tie, the game will go into over-time and the 4th quarter winner will be determined by the FINAL game score, IN REVERSE. $100 per quarter for a total of $400 in payouts SCORE CHANGES THROUGH-OUT GAME: $600 will be set aside to pay the winners for every score change throughout the game. Example: NFC team scores a TD resulting in 6-0 score- this will determine the first winner. An extra point is earned for the TD kick, resulting in another change to 7-0 score – this determines the second winner. Starting score of 0-0 does not pay. The pool of funds available will be divided by the number of winners, based on how many score changes take place through-out the game, including any over-time. Example: There are 10 score changes throughout the game, which will result in 10 winners earning $60 each. $600 in total payouts If you have any questions, please contact one of our fundraising coordinators: Tammi Malinowski (847) 815-8527, tmalinowski@firstambank.com or Petra Croneigh (847) 308-8668, petra@petra4travel.com. Please feel free to share this information (email) with anyone that you feel would like to participate, while also supporting the Lake Zurich Rotary Club. Thank you, in advance, for your participation and generosity. |

Helping Bees SurviveJoin Lake Zurich Rotary for a fascinating meeting this Monday February 6th, 6:30 pm, at Ela Library. This is a hybrid meeting. Please send an email request to lzrotary@gmail.com to request the Zoom link. At the February 6 Rotary Meeting at the Ela Library, Lauren Rosenthal and Yolanda Prado of the Ela Libary will talk about a new initiative the Ela Library is launching this spring: a partnership with Rotary in support of the new Rotary pillar: Sustainability. We will be educating the public about the importance of solitary bees -- 90% of Illinois bees are solitary bees (meaning they do not live in hives like honey and bumble bees do), and the most common is the Mason Bee. With nearly 40% of bees facing extinction today, in spring 2023, the library and Rotary will encourage patrons to cultivate Illinois’ Mason Bee population by building bee houses. Similar to birdhouses, bee houses are relatively simple in form, consisting of a birdhouse-like structure containing a series of exposed, reed-like tubes that the bees can lay their eggs in. We’ll be using the instructions from the U of I College of Agricultural instructions using recycled and eco-friendly materials like paper tubes, paper, natural clay, steel cans, and natural wood. Each bee home will be etched with the library logo and the Rotary logo using our Makerspace GlowForge equipment. In addition, we plan to sponsor speakers to educate the public about the importance of Mason Bees. At the Rotary meeting on February 6 we’ll have the Ela Library’s Makerspace Coordinator Yolanda Prado as a speaker, explaining the project and showing a sample bee house. Yolanda is in charge of the Library’s Makerspace, and is an expert at the GlowForge & 3D printers we have available for the public. |

A Corporate Sponsorship Program for our Charities!Lake Zurich Rotary's Annual Corporate Giving Campaign -- Continuing this Year (click on the image above to donate by credit card) Do you know of a company that might sponsor our club? You know we support good causes in our community and in the world, including Kid Power, End Polio Now, literacy for needy kids, scholarships, outdoor education and more. If you know businesses large or small that want to support our community, our Annual Corporate Giving Campaign gives you a chance to ask them to support us. Many companies have charitable budgets and only need to be asked to support us and be given an easy way to do so. Every member should be able to get a sponsorship from at least one business (employer, client, vendor, favorite restaurant?). Please forward this link (click the photo) and sponsorship information to anyone you talk to about giving to Rotary. If you work for a corporation, we'd be happy to help you navigate corporate giving procedures. Let us know how what we can do to make this easy for you! Sponsors can donate by clicking the "Donate" link on lakezurichrotary.com. Sponsorship checks can be mailed to Lake Zurich Rotary, P.O. Box 188, Lake Zurich, IL 60047. Lake Zurich Rotary is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. You will get recognition for any sponsorships you attract to our club. And if your sponsors want recognition on our website and social media, let us know. |

April 15 Speaker: Bee KeeperNoel Ilkow of Nonie's Bees in Crystal Lake will be speaking to us on Friday April 15 about bees and why we should care about them. (Hint: they are essential to our food supply.)
Noel’s love of bees began when her grandfather would take her to visit his bee yard located in the valley below their home. Many years later a friend of Noel’s gave her a bee hive and her love of bees and the family legacy was reborn. Noel now has 10 hives, four of which are located on an organic farm in Wisconsin.
For Noel, the best part of bee keeping is being able to educate people, especially young people, about the importance of bees, the fragility of the bee population, how the bees impact the health of our earth, and what we can do to help our bees survive. It is with this new-found knowledge she hopes to foster the next generation of bee keepers.
In 2016, Noel is embarking on an ambitious program to distribute 10,000 bee blossom seed bombs. Seed bombs are a simple gardening solution to grow indigenous pollinating plants. The motto of this program is “Let’s help save the bees so they can help save the world.”

Moving NFL StoryDEER PARK AUTHOR JIM PROBSTLE TO SPEAKJim Proebstle, a popular speaker at our club a few years ago stops by this Friday to discuss his newest book.
Unintended Impact: One Athlete's Journey from Concussions in Amateur Football to CTE Dementia is a creative, non-fiction story capturing the tragic and complex struggle of a star athlete's life as a byproduct of concussions received in high school and college football. While players, parents and coaches are past the period of not knowing of the danger of concussions, this story is an imperative reminder of the long-term impact of concussions that cannot be ignored. Football has major benefits for players in growing as adults and accepting responsibilities, which only underscores the increased need for player safety.
Jim Proebstle’s first two novels have received outstanding reviews from readers and industry professionals. They have been recognized with awards from the Eric Hoffer Award, the Indie Book Award, and the International Book Award.
He and his wife, Carole, live in Deer Park, IL and call northern Minnesota home for the summer months.

Speaker on September 18Ret. Col. Jill Morgenthaler to Speak on LeadershipOn September 18, Retired Army Colonel Jill Morgenthaler will speak to the club about her new book, The Courage to Take Command: Leadership Lessons from a Military Trailblazer. Colonel Morgenthaler will pass along leadership lessons drawn from her three decades of military service--from her first days in ROTC to combat in some of the world's most dangerous war zones. Ironically, the military taught her that leadership isn’t about "command and control." Rather, it requires a fine balance of reason and emotion, distance and familiarity, hard and soft power.
The Courage to Take Command provides the strategies and tactics you need to follow through with your leadership vision, inspire your team, and execute your mission―even when the odds may seem overwhelming.
Col. Morgenthaler was the first woman battalion commander in the 88th Regional Support Command; she was the first woman brigade commander in the 84th Division; and she was the first female Homeland Security Advisor for the State of Illinois. The Colonel handled disaster recovery during the San Francisco earthquake, worked as a peacekeeper in Bosnia, and sheltered Kosovar refugees. For her leadership performance in Iraq in 2004, she received the Bronze Star. Plus, she was invited to give a TED talk on her book, a great honor. Watch it at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuoQE3-BTMw

South Africa Author of "My Year of Beds" FridayMy Year of Beds Author to speak to Lake Zurich Rotary Friday Annette Jahnel, the South African author of My Year of Beds, is visiting the Lake Zurich Rotary Club on Friday as part of her world book tour. She was the first woman to circle the globe by car and the book is her tale of the people she met, the traffic jams she endured, and the beds she occupied, mostly in private homes. “My purpose was - and is - to keep people aware of the fact that in spite of many interesting (and sometimes conflicting) differences... we remain a single family on a very small planet.” She has spoken at many Rotary Clubs because her philosophy is very simiar to the Rotarian way of thinking. Her presentation is part travelogue, part motivational speech. “If you’ve ever dreamed about stepping out into a real life adventure – but never quite found the time,” Annette says, “I invite you to join the quest.” The Lake Zurich Rotary Club meets on Fridays for lunch at 12:15 at the Holiday Inn Express, 195 S. Rand Rd., Lake Zurich. First-time guests eat for free. |
