Helping Bees Survive![]() Join Lake Zurich Rotary for a fascinating meeting this Monday February 6th, 6:30 pm, at Ela Library. This is a hybrid meeting. Please send an email request to lzrotary@gmail.com to request the Zoom link. At the February 6 Rotary Meeting at the Ela Library, Lauren Rosenthal and Yolanda Prado of the Ela Libary will talk about a new initiative the Ela Library is launching this spring: a partnership with Rotary in support of the new Rotary pillar: Sustainability. We will be educating the public about the importance of solitary bees -- 90% of Illinois bees are solitary bees (meaning they do not live in hives like honey and bumble bees do), and the most common is the Mason Bee. With nearly 40% of bees facing extinction today, in spring 2023, the library and Rotary will encourage patrons to cultivate Illinois’ Mason Bee population by building bee houses. Similar to birdhouses, bee houses are relatively simple in form, consisting of a birdhouse-like structure containing a series of exposed, reed-like tubes that the bees can lay their eggs in. We’ll be using the instructions from the U of I College of Agricultural instructions using recycled and eco-friendly materials like paper tubes, paper, natural clay, steel cans, and natural wood. Each bee home will be etched with the library logo and the Rotary logo using our Makerspace GlowForge equipment. In addition, we plan to sponsor speakers to educate the public about the importance of Mason Bees. At the Rotary meeting on February 6 we’ll have the Ela Library’s Makerspace Coordinator Yolanda Prado as a speaker, explaining the project and showing a sample bee house. Yolanda is in charge of the Library’s Makerspace, and is an expert at the GlowForge & 3D printers we have available for the public. |

Rotarians of the Week: Kera Radke and Ted Huelsman![]() Kera & Ted are the proud owners of LZFMA (Lake Zurich Family Martial Arts) and they teach martial arts in the Lake Zurich Community. Lake Zurich Family Martial Arts was voted the “New Business of the Year” by the Lake Zurich Chamber of Commerce on January 22nd, 2022. The studio was recognized for its community impact through volunteer opportunities and generous donations. Some of the these contributions include: hosting several blood drives throughout the year, hosting a gigantic free family day event for anyone in the community, a school supply drive, collecting food for a local food bank, made several donations to Toys for Tots, offers programs that regularly donate to the American Cancer Society, served food to the hungry at the St. Francis charity dinner, and raised money for Operation Warm coat distribution for the needy. Kera & Ted have trained and worked together in martial arts for many years now. They both decided to pursue their dream job as martial artists and school owners. Their martial arts programs are super friendly, student focused, safe, and they are family school! The studio has been in business for over 3 years and continues to grow. Most importantly they have created a positive culture of supporting each other. Kera and Ted always jump at the opportunity to do good! Lake Zurich Rotarian of the Week: Barbara Barker![]() In Dubuque, Iowa I was invited to my first Rotary meeting in 2004. I was hooked on the philosophy of, "Service Above Self" and have remained a member ever since. When I moved to Lake Zurich, Illinois in 2019, one of the first things I did was to look for a Rotary Club to which I could become a member. By far, one of the chief draws is the people within the organization and the individuals with whom I serve. One of the great events in which I was involved is "Operation Warm." To see the smiles on the faces of the children after they receive a new coat is very heartwarming. In the past, I have hosted adult educators and business entrepreneurs from Poland and Italy into my home. It was fascinating to learn of the challenges and successes they have had in their country and the many similar experiences we as Americans have shared as well. It is truly a small world. I have been affiliated in healthcare for the past 48 years. First as a respiratory therapist then a nursing home administrator. I have always enjoyed working with people and even now in my retirement years, I work on a per diem basis at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. I enjoy volunteering in the community and continue to do so through Rotary. I currently serve as the secretary for the Lake Zurich Club. My personal pursuits include tennis, trap shooting, and daily workouts at the gym. Staying healthy in mind and body helps me continue my endeavors with Rotary and in my personal life. |

If you know businesses large or small that want to support our community, our Annual Corporate Giving Campaign gives you a chance to ask them to support us. Many companies have charitable budgets and only need to be asked to support us and be given an easy way to do so. Every member should be able to get a sponsorship from at least one business (employer, client, vendor, favorite restaurant?). Please forward this link (click the photo) and sponsorship information to anyone you talk to about giving to Rotary. If you work for a corporation, we'd be happy to help you navigate corporate giving procedures. Let us know how what we can do to make this easy for you! Sponsors can donate by clicking the "Donate" link on lakezurichrotary.com. Sponsorship checks can be mailed to Lake Zurich Rotary, P.O. Box 188, Lake Zurich, IL 60047. April 15 Speaker: Bee Keeper![]() Noel Ilkow of Nonie's Bees in Crystal Lake will be speaking to us on Friday April 15 about bees and why we should care about them. (Hint: they are essential to our food supply.)
Noel’s love of bees began when her grandfather would take her to visit his bee yard located in the valley below their home. Many years later a friend of Noel’s gave her a bee hive and her love of bees and the family legacy was reborn. Noel now has 10 hives, four of which are located on an organic farm in Wisconsin.
For Noel, the best part of bee keeping is being able to educate people, especially young people, about the importance of bees, the fragility of the bee population, how the bees impact the health of our earth, and what we can do to help our bees survive. It is with this new-found knowledge she hopes to foster the next generation of bee keepers.
In 2016, Noel is embarking on an ambitious program to distribute 10,000 bee blossom seed bombs. Seed bombs are a simple gardening solution to grow indigenous pollinating plants. The motto of this program is “Let’s help save the bees so they can help save the world.”

Speaker on September 18Ret. Col. Jill Morgenthaler to Speak on Leadership![]() On September 18, Retired Army Colonel Jill Morgenthaler will speak to the club about her new book, The Courage to Take Command: Leadership Lessons from a Military Trailblazer. Colonel Morgenthaler will pass along leadership lessons drawn from her three decades of military service--from her first days in ROTC to combat in some of the world's most dangerous war zones. Ironically, the military taught her that leadership isn’t about "command and control." Rather, it requires a fine balance of reason and emotion, distance and familiarity, hard and soft power.
The Courage to Take Command provides the strategies and tactics you need to follow through with your leadership vision, inspire your team, and execute your mission―even when the odds may seem overwhelming.
Col. Morgenthaler was the first woman battalion commander in the 88th Regional Support Command; she was the first woman brigade commander in the 84th Division; and she was the first female Homeland Security Advisor for the State of Illinois. The Colonel handled disaster recovery during the San Francisco earthquake, worked as a peacekeeper in Bosnia, and sheltered Kosovar refugees. For her leadership performance in Iraq in 2004, she received the Bronze Star. Plus, she was invited to give a TED talk on her book, a great honor. Watch it at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuoQE3-BTMw
